Key Highlights

High Demand & Limited Supply

Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus have produced the top Spanish dry wines traded by value over the past ten years and represent the gold standard for investible wines coming from the country. Aged 10+ years before release, Vega Sicilia’s Unico led the market in value traded, producing 8,300 cases per year on average. Pingus ranked second despite only producing a microscopic 500 cases (6,000 bottles) per year, thanks to strong demand driving prices.

Pingus - Spain’s Cult Wine

Pingus exploded onto the scene in 1996 when Robert Parker declared its 1995 vintage “one of the greatest young red wines I have ever tasted.” Over the past 25 years, Pingus has established itself as one of the most collectible wines in the world. Recent vintages have seen the quality improve even further, with five of the last six vintages receiving scores of 99-points or better with three 100-point scores in 2018 (included in collection), 2016 (included in collection), and 2014 (not in collection).

Vega Sicilia - The Icon

Vega Sicilia has long been globally recognized as the most prestigious wine producer in Spain. In 2020, this fame reached new heights as Liv-Ex ranked Vega Sicilia #12 in their Power 100, which ranks “most powerful brands in the fine wine market.” In the #12 spot, Vega Sicilia ranked ahead of big names such as Mouton Rothschild and Romanée-Conti. This global notoriety resulted in the 2008 Vega Sicilia Unico ranking in the top ten in returns in 2020, coming in 6th up 22.8% YOY.

Collection Description

Two producers have represented Spanish investment-grade wines for the last two decades: Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus. Vega Sicilia Unico has long been the most coveted collectible wine produced in Spain and has consistently been the sole Spanish representative in the Liv-Ex Wine 1000. Vega Sicilia's status as the undisputed #1 in Spain was maintained until Robert Parker tasted Dominio de Pingus' 1995 "Pingus" (the first vintage ever produced) and declared it "one of the greatest young red wines I have ever tasted."  Like Screaming Eagle in the US, after the Parker review, Pingus' wines were instantly catapulted to cult status, where they have remained ever since. Vega Sicilia Unico and Pingus continue to lead the Spanish collectible market as the top two Spanish dry wines traded by value annually. As the leading Spanish wines, Pingus and Vega Sicilia are key components of the Liv-Ex Rest of World 60 Index, which has seen gains of 31% over the last five years.
